HOMEWORK: MORADO
MORADO HOMEWORK 1 (due at class 2)
Lesson: The Future Tense
The future tense (expressing that something "will" happen) for regular verbs it’s formed as follows: add the following endings to the complete, unadulterated infinitive:
-é
-ás
-á
-emos
-án
So, for example, the verb HABLAR in the future tense looks like this:
hablaré
hablarás
hablará
hablaremos
hablarán
Assignment 1
Do reading of your choice in Spanish (a children’s book, a chapter book, an article) and bring it to class, prepared to tell a partner about it. (This assignment applies to Homework 1, 3, 5, and 7.)
Assignment 2
Write a page, double spaced, about what has happened in your lifetime as if it hasn't happened yet. Imagine have not yet been born. From that perspective, predict the things which are going to happen in your life (though, in reality, they have already happened.)
MORADO HOMEWORK 2 (due at class 3)
Lesson: Irregular verbs in the future tense: CABER, HABER, SABER, PODER, QUERER
These verbs use the same endings as regular future tense verbs. (See Morado Homework 1.) But instead of retaining the whole infinitive as the root, the E in the infinitive “-ER” ending is dropped. For example:
sabré
sabrás
sabrá
sabremos
sabrán
By the way, CABER means to fit inside something, as in: Todos estos libros no cabrán en la bolsa. (All these books won't fit in the bag.)
It does NOT mean "fit" as in "These shoes don't fit me."
HABER is used principally in two ways:
1. To mean that something is present (in the present tense, HAY means "there is" or "there are"). In this sense, HABER has only one form in the future tense: HABRÁ (there will be). It doesn't matter if what there will be is singular or plural.
For example: Habrá 5 estudiantes en la clase mañana. (There will be 5 students in the class tomorrow.)
2. As the helping verb in the "perfect" tenses. For example:
(Present perfect example) He viajado a Arizona dos veces. (I have traveled to Arizona twice.)
(Future perfect example) En mayo, habré viajado a Arizona tres veces. (In May, I will have traveled to Arizona three times.)
Assignment
Write a page, double spaced, about what you think will happen in your life during the next week. Include the verbs CABER, HABER, SABER, PODER, and QUERER.
MORADO HOMEWORK 3 (due at class 4)
Lesson: Irregular verbs in the future tense: SALIR, TENER, PONER, VENIR
These verbs use the same endings as regular future tense verbs. (See Morado Homework 1.) But instead of retaining the whole infinitive as the root, a D is substituted for the E or I in the infinitive ending. For example:
saldré
saldrás
saldrá
saldremos
saldrán
Assignment 1
Do reading of your choice in Spanish (a children’s book, a chapter book, an article) and bring it to class, prepared to tell a partner about it.
Assignment 2

MORADO HOMEWORK 4 (Due at class 5)
Lesson: Irregular verbs in the future tense: DECIR, HACER
These verbs use the same endings as regular future tense verbs. (See Morado Homework 1.) But instead of retaining the whole infinitive as the root, DECIR and HACER are get both the letters E and C removed.
DECIR
diré
dirás
dirá
diremos
dirán
HACER
haré
harás
hará
haremos
harán
Assignment
Write a page, double spaced, about what you think will happen in the world during the next twelve months. Include the verbs HACER and DECIR.
MORADO HOMEWORK 5 (due at class 6)
Lesson: Preterite Tense: Irregular Verbs: DECIR, HACER, QUERER and VENIR
The PRETERITE TENSE is essentially the simple past.
Examples:
Hablé con mi hermana ayer. (I spoke with my sister yesteray.)
¿Quién se comió el último trozo de pizza? (Who ate the last slice of pizza?)
The PRETERITE is not used to say that something "was happening" or "used to happen." The IMPERFECT TENSE is used for that. (See the Morado course homework page for lessons on regular verbs in the preterite and imperfect tenses.)
This week, you are to study and practice the following four verbs that are irregular in the preterite:
DECIR
dije
dijiste
dijo
dijimos
dijeron
HACER
hice
hiciste
hizo
hicimos
hicieron
VENIR
vine
viniste
vino
vinimos
vinieron
QUERER
quise
quisiste
quiso
quisimos
quisieron
Assignment 1
Do reading of your choice in Spanish (a children’s book, a chapter book, an article) and bring it to class, prepared to tell a partner about it.
Assignment 2
Write out the conjugation for each of these verbs until you can do it from memory.
Assignment 3
Practice each verb orally until you can do it from memory.
Assignment 4
Write a page-long sequence of events in the preterite (This happened, then that happened, then something else happened.) Include the 4 verbs above.
MORADO HOMEWORK 6 (due at class 7)
Lesson: Preterite Tense: Irregular Verbs: PONER PODER, TENER, SABER
These verbs are irregular in the preterite AND three of them (PODER, TENER, and SABER) actually have a distinctive meaning in the preterite from the their meaning in the present.
PONER
puse
pusiste
puso
pusimos
pusieron
PODER
pude
pudiste
pudo
pudimos
pudieron
In the present indicative, PODER means "to be able" or "can." In the preterite, however, PODER means "succeeded in doing something" or, in the negative, "failed at doing something." It expresses more the effect of circumstances than one's innate ability. Example: Traté de abrir la puerta pero no pude. (I tried to open the door, but I failed.)
TENER
tuve
tuviste
tuvo
tuvimos
tuvieron
In the present indicative, TENER means "to have." In the preterite, TENER means "to receive" or "to get." It expresses the moment when possession begins. Example: Ayer tuve una carta de mi abuela. (Yesterday I got a letter from my grandma.)
SABER
supe
supiste
supo
supimos
supieron
In the present indicative, SABER means "to know." In the preterite, SABER means "to find out" or "to discover." It expresses the moment when knowing begins. Example: No fue hasta esta mañana que supe que mis diamantes eran falsos. (It wasn't until this morning that I found out that my diamonds were fake.)
Assignment 1
Write out the conjugation for each of these verbs until you can do it from memory.
Assignment 2
Practice each verb orally until you can do it from memory.
Assignment 3
Write a story inspired by these verbs. Something that takes place in the past of course. Use the verbs in the preterite as much as possible.
MORADO HOMEWORK 7 (due at class 8)
Lesson: Preterite Tense: Irregular Verbs: ESTAR, ANDAR
These two verbs are similar in their form in the preterite to the verb TENER.
ESTAR
estuve
estuviste
estuvo
estuvimos
estuvieron
ANDAR
anduve
anduviste
anduvo
anduvimos
anduvieron
Note that ANDAR, whether preterite or not, means more than most students know. It is commonly thought of by students as meaning merely "to walk." But also means:
1. to go via a particular mode of transportation
Example: El carro estaba en el taller, así que ayer anduve en bus. (The car was in the shop, so yesterday I'm got around by bus.)
2. to function
Example: Ayer el carro no anduvo bien, por eso lo llevé al taller. (Yesterday, the car started not working well, that's why I took it to the shop.)
3. to wander
Example: Ayer anduvimos en el parque por dos horas. (Yesterday we wandered around the park for two hours.)
4. to wear
Example: Ayer anduve una corbata porque tuve una entrevista. (Yesterday I work a tie because I had an interview.)
5. to have something on your person
Example: Ayer no pude comprar café porque no andaba suficiente dinero. (Yesterday I couldn't buy coffee because I didn't have enough money on me.)
Assignment 1
Do reading of your choice in Spanish (a children’s book, a chapter book, an article) and bring it to class, prepared to tell a partner about it.
Assignment 2
Practice the conjugation of ESTAR and ANDAR in the preterite in both written and oral forms until you have them memorized.
Assignment 3
Write a story in the past using both ESTAR and ANDAR in the preterite, trying to give examples of all 5 meanings of ANDAR.
